Helping at home
In 1st grade, children learn that adding a small number to a bigger one changes the ones first. 34 + 5 keeps the 3 tens and makes 9 ones, so the answer is 39. When the ones add up to 10 or more, as in 47 + 8, they make a new ten: 7 and 8 make 15, so 4 tens and 15 ones is 55.
A common slip is adding the 1-digit number to the tens, so 34 + 5 becomes 84. Another is forgetting the new ten and writing 45 for 47 + 8.
One way to help at home: ask your child to say the tens and ones out loud before adding. "47 is 4 tens and 7 ones. I add 8 ones." Counting on from the bigger number with fingers is fine at first. Over time, encourage the jump to the next ten: 47 + 3 is 50, and 5 more is 55.
