Helping at home
In 1st grade, children add within 20 and become fluent with the facts within 10. They learn strategies that make the bigger facts easier: counting on, making a ten (9 + 6 is 10 + 5), and using doubles (6 + 6 = 12, so 6 + 7 = 13).
The usual slip is counting on and landing one off, often by counting the starting number again. Another is not noticing that the order does not matter: 2 + 9 is the same as 9 + 2, and starting from 9 is much quicker.
One way to help at home: ask "which number is bigger?" and start from it. For facts near 10, ask how many more make 10. Keep it short: one sheet, then talk about which problems felt easy and which were slow. The slow ones are the facts to practice next.
