Subtract 3-digit numbers, no regrouping
2 printable PDFs, each with its answer key. These sheets practice subtracting 3-digit numbers in columns when every top digit is big enough, like 586 − 243.

What's on the sheet
20 problems written in columns, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:
- 799 − 269 = 530
- 258 − 134 = 124
- 880 − 680 = 200
- 747 − 737 = 10
Helping at home
By the end of 2nd grade, children subtract numbers within 1,000 by place value. For 586 − 243 they subtract the ones (6 − 3 = 3), the tens (8 − 4 = 4) and the hundreds (5 − 2 = 3), so the difference is 343. These sheets need no regrouping, so the focus is lining up hundreds, tens and ones.
The usual slip is a column out of line, especially when a number has a 0 in it, like 705 − 302. Another is subtracting the top digit from the bottom digit.
One way to help at home: read each number aloud with its places before starting, and check each answer by adding it back: 343 + 243 should make 586. These sheets build the habits your child will need when regrouping comes in 3rd grade.
