What's on the sheet
20 problems written in columns, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:
- 295 + 205 = 500
- 559 + 376 = 935
- 338 + 577 = 915
- 160 + 342 = 502
Helping at home
In 3rd grade, children add numbers up to 1,000 fluently. In 456 + 278, the ones make 14, so they write 4 and carry 1 ten. The tens then make 5 + 7 + 1 = 13 tens, so they write 3 and carry 1 hundred. The hundreds make 4 + 2 + 1 = 7, and the sum is 734.
A common slip is forgetting a carried digit, especially the second one. Another is writing the whole column total, like 14, in the answer row.
One way to help at home: ask your child to estimate first. 456 + 278 is about 450 + 300, so the answer should be near 750. If the answer comes out at 624 or 1,734, the estimate shows something went wrong. Checking with subtraction works too: 734 − 278 should give back 456.
