Helping at home
In 3rd grade, children learn all the division facts that match the times tables up to 10 × 10. Dividing by 3, 4 and 6 builds on the 3, 4 and 6 times tables. For 24 ÷ 4, they think, "4 times what is 24?" and answer 6.
The usual slip is a near miss from a times table not yet known, like 42 ÷ 6 = 6. Facts like 24 can also be tricky because they belong to several tables: 24 ÷ 4 = 6, 24 ÷ 6 = 4 and 24 ÷ 3 = 8.
One way to help at home: practice in fact families. Write 3, 8 and 24 and ask your child for all four facts: 3 × 8 = 24, 8 × 3 = 24, 24 ÷ 3 = 8 and 24 ÷ 8 = 3. Doubling helps with the 6s: 6 is double 3, so 6 × 7 is double 3 × 7, which is 42.
