Helping at home

In 3rd grade, children start learning multiplication as equal groups: 5 × 6 means 5 groups of 6, or 6 groups of 5. The 2, 5 and 10 tables come first because they follow counting patterns children already know: counting by 2s, 5s and 10s.

The usual slip is counting by the wrong number, or losing track of how many jumps were made. Some children also mix up multiplication with addition, writing 5 × 6 = 11.

One way to help at home: count by 5s or 10s on fingers, one finger per group, and stop when the fingers match the other number. Coins are useful: 6 nickels make 30 cents, so 6 × 5 = 30. Doubles make the 2s easy: 2 × 8 is 8 + 8. Once these are quick, the 3, 4 and 6 tables are next.
