- 2263 + 3883 = 6146
- 9621 + 4529 = 14150
Helping at home
In 4th grade, children use the standard way of adding in columns for any whole numbers. In 3,684 + 2,759 they work right to left: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, carrying a 1 whenever a column makes 10 or more. The sum is 6,443.
The usual slips are losing a carry when several come in a row, and misaligning a number when a place holds a 0, like 4,056. Writing the numbers neatly in columns prevents most mistakes.
One way to help at home: estimate before adding. 3,684 + 2,759 is about 3,700 + 2,800, which is 6,500, so 6,443 makes sense. Graph paper or lined paper turned sideways helps keep the columns straight. If your child gets stuck, go back one size: the same steps work for 3-digit numbers.
