Multiply a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number

2 printable PDFs, each with its answer key. These sheets practice multiplying a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number in columns, like 245 × 36.

What's on the sheet

12 problems written in columns, with room to work, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:

  • 670 × 70 = 46900
  • 842 × 12 = 10104
  • 843 × 31 = 26133
  • 265 × 32 = 8480

Helping at home

In 5th grade, children multiply multi-digit whole numbers with the standard method. For 245 × 36, they multiply 245 by 6 (1,470), then by 30 (7,350, with a 0 in the ones place), and add the two rows to get 8,820.

The most common slip is leaving out the 0 in the second row, which shifts it and gives a much smaller answer. Another is a lost carry, especially when the carried digits from the two rows are written in the same spot.

One way to help at home: estimate first. 245 × 36 is about 250 × 40, which is 10,000, so an answer near 9,000 makes sense. Encourage your child to cross out each carry once it is used, or to write the carries for the second row in a different place. A calculator can be a good checking tool after the work is done.
