Add 2-digit numbers, no regrouping

2 printable PDFs, each with its answer key. These sheets practice adding two 2-digit numbers in columns when no column adds up to 10 or more.

What's on the sheet

20 problems written in columns, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:

  • 39 + 20 = 59
  • 12 + 41 = 53
  • 48 + 40 = 88
  • 13 + 52 = 65

Helping at home

In 2nd grade, children add numbers like 42 + 35 by lining up the tens and ones. They add the ones (2 + 5 = 7), then the tens (4 + 3 = 7), so 42 + 35 = 77. These sheets keep every column under 10, so your child can focus on lining up and adding by place.

The usual slip is not lining up the digits, especially when the second number has a small tens digit, like 61 + 18. Another is adding left to right and mixing a ones digit into the tens.

One way to help at home: have your child name the places before adding. "Ones first: 2 and 5. Then tens: 4 tens and 3 tens." A quick check is to round: 42 + 35 is close to 40 + 35, so the answer should be a bit more than 75. Once these feel easy, the sheets with regrouping are the next step.
