What's on the sheet
20 problems written in columns, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:
- 74 + 62 = 136
- 60 + 76 = 136
- 48 + 64 = 112
- 42 + 63 = 105
Helping at home
In 2nd grade, children add numbers like 38 + 47 in columns. The ones make 15, which is 1 ten and 5 ones. They write the 5 in the ones place and carry the new ten to the tens column, so 3 tens, 4 tens and 1 more ten make 8 tens. The answer is 85.
The most common slip is writing both digits of the ones total, giving 715 for 38 + 47. Another is forgetting to add the carried ten, giving 75.
One way to help at home: use the words "make a ten." Ask, "Do the ones make a new ten?" If they do, your child writes a small 1 above the tens before adding them. Base-ten blocks, bundles of 10 straws or even coins (dimes and pennies) show what a carried ten really is: ten ones traded for one ten.
