What's on the sheet
20 problems written in columns, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:
- 641 + 134 = 775
- 114 + 585 = 699
- 304 + 292 = 596
- 270 + 729 = 999
Helping at home
By the end of 2nd grade, children add numbers up to 1,000 by place value. For 324 + 152 they add the ones (4 + 2 = 6), the tens (2 + 5 = 7) and the hundreds (3 + 1 = 4), so the sum is 476. These sheets keep every column under 10, so the work is about lining up hundreds, tens and ones.
The usual slip is misreading a place, such as treating a 0 in the tens as nothing to line up, so 305 + 241 comes out wrong. Another is starting from the left and losing track of a column.
One way to help at home: read each number aloud with its places, "three hundred twenty-four," before adding. Then ask your child to say what each column means: "2 tens and 5 tens make 7 tens." Saying the place keeps the digits where they belong, which matters even more once regrouping comes in.
