Helping at home
In 4th grade, children divide numbers up to four digits by a one-digit number, using what they know about place value and multiplication. For 72 ÷ 4, they ask how many 4s are in 7 tens (1 ten, with 3 tens left over), trade those 3 tens for ones to make 32 ones, and then find 8 fours. The answer is 18.
The most common slip is forgetting to bring down the next digit, or bringing it down without subtracting first. Another is writing a digit in the wrong place in the answer.
One way to help at home: check every answer by multiplying. 18 × 4 should make 72. If it does not, the steps are worth looking at together. Saying the steps out loud helps: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. These sheets have no remainders, so a check that does not come out even means a slip.
