Divide a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number, with remainders

2 printable PDFs, each with its answer key. These sheets practice dividing a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number with long division, where most answers have a remainder.

What's on the sheet

9 problems set up for long division, with room to work, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:

  • 88 ÷ 5 = 17 R3
  • 30 ÷ 4 = 7 R2
  • 63 ÷ 4 = 15 R3
  • 29 ÷ 2 = 14 R1

Helping at home

In 4th grade, children learn that a division does not always come out even. For 88 ÷ 5, they find 1 five in 8 tens with 3 tens left, make 38 ones, and find 7 fives, which use 35. That leaves 3, so the answer is 17 R3.

The most common slip is a remainder that is too big, such as 16 R8 for 88 ÷ 5. A remainder must always be smaller than the number you divide by, or another group could be made. Another slip is forgetting to write the remainder at all.

One way to help at home: check with multiplication and addition. 17 × 5 = 85, and 85 + 3 = 88. Real sharing helps it make sense: share 13 crackers among 4 people, and talk about the 1 that is left over.
