What's on the sheet
9 problems set up for long division, with room to work, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:
- 304 ÷ 2 = 152
- 386 ÷ 3 = 128 R2
- 605 ÷ 2 = 302 R1
- 411 ÷ 2 = 205 R1
Helping at home
In 4th grade, children extend long division to bigger numbers. For 756 ÷ 6, they share the 7 hundreds first (1 hundred each, 1 hundred left), trade the leftover hundred for 10 tens to make 15 tens, then the tens, then the ones. The answer is 126.
Slips usually come when a step gives 0, as in 618 ÷ 6. The 1 ten cannot be shared among 6, so a 0 goes in the tens place of the answer: 103, not 13. Another slip is subtracting wrongly in the middle of the steps.
One way to help at home: estimate first. 756 ÷ 6 is between 100 and 200, because 6 × 100 = 600 and 6 × 200 = 1,200. An answer of 12 or 1,260 is then easy to spot as wrong. Checking by multiplying the answer by the divisor catches the rest.
