Helping at home
In kindergarten, children add within 10 by joining two groups and counting them. Over time they start to know the small facts without counting, and the pairs that make 10, like 7 and 3, become especially important.
Young children often count both numbers from 1 each time, which is slow. Some also write numbers backwards, like a reversed 3 or 7, which is common and fades with practice.
One way to help at home: use small objects, like coins, buttons or crackers. Put out 4 and 3, and ask how many in all. Then try counting on from the bigger number: "4, then 5, 6, 7." For the pairs that make 10, show ten fingers and fold some down: 7 up and 3 down. Short, playful practice works best at this age.
