- 1 + 4 = 5
Helping at home
Kindergarten children learn to add within 5 until they know the facts quickly. At first they show each number with objects or fingers and count them all. With practice, they just know that 3 and 2 make 5.
Some children are still learning to write their numbers, and a reversed 2 or 5 is normal. Others count carefully but lose track halfway, so counting objects in a line helps.
One way to help at home: count real things together. "You have 2 grapes. I give you 1 more. How many now?" Show the problem on fingers, then read it aloud from the sheet. Praise the counting, not just the right answer. A sheet a day, or even half a sheet, is plenty at this age.
