Helping at home
In kindergarten, children subtract within 10 by taking away from a group and counting what is left. Over time they connect subtraction to the addition facts they know: if 4 + 5 = 9, then 9 − 4 = 5.
Young children often count the whole group again after taking some away, which is slow. Mixing up the plus and minus signs on a sheet is also common at this age.
One way to help at home: act it out with small objects. "You have 9 crackers. You eat 4. How many are left?" Fingers work well: show 9, fold down 4, count the rest. Read the minus sign as "take away" so the meaning is clear. Short, cheerful practice works best.
