Subtract within 5

2 printable PDFs, each with its answer key. These sheets practice the very first subtraction facts, within 5, like 4 − 1 or 5 − 3.

What's on the sheet

36 problems written across, with a box for each answer, on US Letter paper, with a box for the score. Some from sheet 1:

  • 4 − 1 = 3
  • 4 − 3 = 1
  • 5 − 3 = 2
  • 2 − 1 = 1

Helping at home

Kindergarten children learn to subtract within 5 until the facts come quickly. At first they show the starting number with objects or fingers, take some away and count what is left. With practice, they just know that 5 take away 3 is 2.

Some children are still learning what the minus sign means and add instead. Writing numbers backwards, like a reversed 2, is normal at this age.

One way to help at home: tell tiny stories. "There are 4 birds on a fence. 1 flies away. How many are left?" Use fingers or toys to act it out, then look at the same problem on the sheet. Read the minus sign as "take away". Half a sheet a day is plenty.
